gapgirlonmission

The confessions of a former shopoholic continue as I return to Belize for a second year this fall. Earlier posts tell tales from my first year in Belize as a volunteer teacher at Mt. Carmel High School in Benque Viejo del Carmen from 2004-2005. I will return to Belize this fall to work as a missionary on San Pedro, the "La Isla bonita" of Madonna's dreams and my home for the next year!

why the title?

So, this coming August, in about 45 days, I will be embarking on a year-long mission to Belize to volunteer as a teacher for a year. Belize is a second-world country located on the coast of Central America, bordering Mexico and Guatemala. This past spring, as a job-searching senior preparing to graduate from college, I had the opportunity to go on a short-term mission trip and teach in Belize for the week. The experience was incredible, and God really opened my eyes to several things. First, that I was in an opportune place in my life to do a year of service. Second, that the skills I would have as a new Theology/ Religious Education graduate were needed. Finally, I recognized that being raised in a nice beach town and working through college at the Gap had left me in need of a serious reality check. I really desire to see what God has to teach me away from the material comforts that I've grown accustomed to. Hence, another reason for this Blog is that at my Pastor's recommendation, I plan to keep notes on what I see and experience, and what I learn through this time on mission.

Why blog?

As much as I dislike the idea that my rantings are really worth posting on the world-wide-web, I think that this is a solution to the annoyance that bi-weekly "mass-e-mails" are to most people. This way, those who want an update on my life are able to seek it out at their convenience.
